Old Bury Hill Lake

Old Bury Hill Lake is a spring fed, 12.5 acre tree-lined estate lake with a wooded island, nature reserve, and feeder stream running alongside. Depths vary considerably and run from 2' to 11' with an average depth of 7'. Between the dense beds of lilies and irises, which surround the entire lake, 75 well spaced, sturdy wooden fishing platforms have been created to provide safe, comfortable access to the water.

It is a traditional mixed fishery, with a large head of carp, tench and bream and an abundance of roach, rudd, perch, crucian carp, chub, pike and zander.

As one would expect, this mature fishery has over the years produced many fine catches and specimen fish which includes tench and bream to over 10lb, carp and pike to 30lb, roach and rudd to 3lb and perch to 4lb, crucian carp to 5lb and zander to 16lb.

All methods work well on the day, but traditionally Old Bury Hill Lake is a waggler and feeder water. The fishing is relatively easy and individual bags to over 200lb are not uncommon in the spring and summer months from both the bank and boat. The three-hour match record currently stands at 78 lb, the six-hour record at 137lb, and two anglers, John Houseman and Chris Tulley, shared a 500lb pleasure haul in May 2000 which included tench to 8 lb while boat fishing the 'jungle'.

Boat Fishing

For those wishing to get away from it all and explore the more remote areas of this extensive lake, our purpose built flat bottom fishing punts will add a new dimension to your fishing.

Accommodating 1, 2 or 3 anglers comfortably and safely, our boat fishing is very popular and as such it is advisable to book in advance.

For safety reasons, children must be accompanied by an adult and all anglers are advised to wear a life jacket, which are available on free loan secured by a £25 deposit.

Aeration System

Since the installation in 1997 of the most advanced aeration systems ever built at a commercial coarse fishery, sport at Bury Hill has been booming. A healthy environment produces healthy, hard-fighting fish, which means happy anglers. The big bonus is in the summer months, when a spell of prolonged hot weather can make oxygen levels drop dangerously low making fish lethargic and lacking in appetite.

But at Bury Hill the two giant corkscrew water pumps are capable of shifting over 7 million gallons of water a day which is returned to the main lake via an artificial weir and man-made 'stream' re-entering at three inlets along the Island Bank. Indeed, during the colder winter months, the flow generated keeps large areas of the main lake free from ice meaning that we are truly open every day.

Large numbers of bream, roach and carp are attracted to these inlets, providing bags in excess of 100lb for anglers fishing in the mouth of the flow. The constant movement of the entire body of the lake encourages fish of all species to move and feed growing in strength and weight in the rejuvenated water.
