Method note 02 · Boat Fishing

Boat fishing

Flat-bottomed punts for one to three anglers opened up the remote corners of the Old Lake, including the reedy area anglers called “the jungle”.

The punts

“For those wishing to get away from it all and explore the more remote areas of this extensive lake, our purpose built flat bottom fishing punts will add a new dimension to your fishing.” Each took one, two or three anglers, and boat fishing was popular enough that booking ahead was advised [Archive, 29 January 2002].

In 2002 the fishery’s boathouse complex held the shop and café [Archive, 21 March 2002]; it is marked on the swim map.

The jungle

In May 2000 John Houseman and Chris Tulley shared a 500 lb pleasure haul, including tench to 8 lb, while boat fishing “the jungle” [Archive, 29 January 2002]. The same reedy area held the Old Lake’s few huge crucians, caught on bread flake tight against the reeds [Archive, 24 March 2002].

Safety

Children had to be accompanied by an adult, and all anglers were advised to wear a life jacket, available on free loan [Archive, 29 January 2002].

Boats in winter

Winter produced “excellent multiple catches of specimen carp from both the bank and boat” [Archive, 24 March 2002], and the predator days ran from bank and boat between October and March [Archive, 12 December 2001]. See predator season.
