Specimens on the Old Lake

“If specimen tench and bream are more your scene, fish to 10 lb of both species are caught every season” [Archive, 24 March 2002]. The Old Lake was “also famous for its big tench, bream and crucian carp”.

The 500 lb pleasure haul shared by John Houseman and Chris Tulley in May 2000, boat fishing “the jungle”, included tench to 8 lb [Archive, 29 January 2002].

The crucians of the jungle

Old Bury Hill held “a small number of huge crucian carp, which run to 5lb”. These shy fish frequented the jungle and “can be caught using bread flake fished tight against the reeds” [Archive, 24 March 2002]. The jungle is marked on the swim map.

Milton: tench and crucians in numbers

Milton was managed so that “the tench and crucian carp fishing dominates” [Archive, 31 January 2002]. In 2002 it produced tench to 7 lb and crucians to 3 lb, with bags over 250 lb “fairly common” in spring and summer [Archive, 24 March 2002]. The former operator later described its crucians as approaching 4 lb [Operator site, 26 October 2026].
